K-9 New Life's HAPPY TAILS

We LOVE to hear about former K-9 New Life dogs. Over the years we have received many updates from many wonderful families that opened up their home and hearts to these ever so deserving dogs. Many of the dogs that have come through our rescue have not had the best start in life. We at K9NL consider ourselves so lucky to have been a part of their journey and are extremely grateful for any and all updates that come our way. If you have adopted a dog from us, we would be thrilled to hear from you, and with your permission, post your pup's story to this page. You can e-mail your updates to the e-mail link below.

Mugsy, Lola, & Shelby

Dear K9 New Life,

I was browsing your site and wanted to share our experiences.  We have adopted three of your dogs over the years.  Our first was adoption was Lola.  Lola was a spunky dog who liked to explore the wetlands behind our house.  She was full of vinegar and spice and brought great joy to my wife and I.  She was our 3rd adoption from a rescue agency and confirmed in our minds that rescue pets are the greatest.  She shared our home with Sadie, and adoption from another rescue organization.  When Sadie passed we turned to you for a companion for Lola.  Thus, Mugsy entered our life.  Lola and Mugsy became best friends and together brought joy and happiness to our home.  We were heart broken when Lola left us in a matter of hours.  We were not ready for the void she left in our lives.  Again, we turned to you for a companion for Mugsy and Shelby became a cherished member of the family.  Mugsy has passed but Shelby is still with us and she continues in the tradition of our previous adoptions of providing love and joy.  We want to thank you for allowing us to share our home with three wonderful companions.

myah

We are excited to announce that beautiful Myah has found the perfect family with whom to share her life.

It was love at first sight for Larry and Shelly of Moyock, NC and vice versa for Myah. Her new family is absolutely enamored with our girl, and everyone is enjoying new discoveries every day such as Myah’s love of car rides to visit Grandma. And what luck!!! Myah’s new folks have their own swimming pool which they have encouraged her to use (although her new mom Shelly claims she’s “not sure if Myah is ready to be a swimmer”). Nevertheless, the option is always open.

As you can see, Myah already has become an official family member joining Larry and Shelly’s darling grandson on his seventh birthday festivities. My, she looks stunning in her birthday hat! What a lucky dog and congratulations to her new family for adding Myah to their wonderful clan.

Have a great life, Myah, Larry, and Shelly!

OLIVE

K9 new life,

Ten years ago, we took a chance on a Hurricane Katrina Rescue named Olive, who y'all matched us up with after we asked for a medium size, quiet, low-energy dog. You could not have picked a more perfect dog for us. You guys went down after the storm and brought vanloads of sad, mistreated, malnourished dogs up to VA, and although we knew it might make our upcoming move to Seattle more difficult, we just could not resist hearing the sad stories of these animals. Olive had been found on Olive street, hence her name; we decided to keep her name and not add to any more tumult in her
life.

Olive had terrible heartworms, was malnourished, and had already had anywhere from 1-2 litters of puppies. You fixed her, took her due claws out, treated her heartworms. On the way back from picking her up in Va Beach to Williamsburg, she laid her head down on my husband's shifting arm, just exhausted from the whole ordeal.

The dog has been a light in our life for ten years now, so I just made a donation in honor of what joy she has brought us. We have lived in Seattle for 9 years, and Olive is doing fine. In fact I just had to chase her from eating out of the trash, a habit she no doubt picked up in NOLA which has been lifelong. She is older now, suffering a little bit from dementia, but in otherwise great health. We live in a townhouse with two sets of stairs which she has no problem traversing. She has become completely accustomed to the Seattle weather (though she has always hated rain!), and does not handle heat well. She has gotten sweeter as she's gotten older; she was very reserved and timid as a younger dog.

So this email is to thank you for your work and for bringing us our fabulous dog.

Here are three pictures. The first is from the day we took her home, the second is a year later when covered the backseat in a shower curtain and moved to Seattle with the dog and cat, and the third is Olive today, with her grey muzzle.

Thanks again,
Erin Gengo & Trey Causey

molly

Do you remember Aggy aka Aggie aka Becca? An animal control officer brought her to the SPCA of Northeastern North Carolina as a stray in July 2013. The shelter staff named her Becca. She was heart worm positive in a busy shelter in the summer, when more dogs are arriving than space is available. The shelter staff and volunteers knew Becca would be a great companion (and heart worms are treatable!), so they worked hard to find a rescue that could pull her... and even offered to pay for her heart worm treatment! Fortunately, K-9 New Life had an available foster home, so Becca was saved! When she joined our rescue, she became known as Aggy. This lovely lady was adopted in October 2013 by a wonderful woman who successfully helped Aggy adjust to sharing a house with three cats. We were over the moon about Aggy's new forever home -- and then we found out her new mom planned for Aggy (now known as Molly) to become a therapy dog! Well, we've received news that Molly just passed the AKC's Canine Good Citizen Program AND her therapy tests! WOOHOO! We are so happy for Molly and her mom! And to Gillian, Jo, Sabrenna, and all the dedicated staff and volunteers at the SPCA of Northeastern North Carolina -- THANK YOU!

mickey

Update on Mickey (formerly known as Hamish): We went through an entire week with NO accidents. I think he's finally getting used to my schedule, and knows I'm coming home. He has also made friends with our neighbor's dog! We walk every evening together with them, and he absolutely loves it. I've attached a few photos of him from our trip today to a local park located about 20 minutes from where we live. We all had an excellent time! (Note from K9NL: These photos are stunning!)

ABBY  &  Jethro

These fun-loving dogs are Abby and Jethro. Abby was known as Scout while she was waiting for her forever home. Jethro was previously known as Sylvester Wrinkle. Now they both have new names to go with their wonderful new lives. Thank you to Sheila and Bruce for opening your hearts and home to both of these wonderful dogs!

Maizy

Picture
Dear K-9 New Life,

This note is long overdue. I just love and adore my adopted Poodle-Maltese mix; she’s a 4 legged sweetheart. Here’s a pic of Maizy (formally Haley) and I enjoying the outdoors.

I adopted her June 2012 I think. You had rescued her from a NC shelter that had taken her in and could no longer keep her.   I can’t imagine anyone turning out such a loving sweet cuddler. She gets along fine w/my big grey cat as long as she lets her be Alpha.

CLOVER & CLIPPER

Hello! I just wanted to take a moment and send you an update for both Clipper and “Janie” now named Clover. Both are doing very well!!

Clover has had her surgery (2 now, the 2nd removed the rod that was placed for the successful fusion) and is 1.5 years post the first surgery. J

She is running around chasing squirrels up trees (hasn’t caught one yet, but she is determined). She is past all food and territorial aggression (to be expected when coming from a pack environment). She is a sweet and feisty little thing and she gives new life to our home….she does wear out the old boys and then me too!

Clipper is still quiet as ever but he is my solid rock. He and I seemed to have been made for each other and connected immediately. He is such a gentle and sweet boy….I find him waiting for me every night at bed time, ready to snuggle for the night! He still doesn’t play with many toys but on an occasion he gets super excited and forgets his reserved self and will toss a toy up in the air and chase it.

Thanks again for all that you do to help these animals and connect them to their forever homes and families.

TIBERIUS

Picture
We adopted Tiberius over 2 years ago, a beautiful brindle, when he was 8 weeks old and he has endeared himself to us from day 1. He is so smart and sweet. He has impressed everyone he meets with his friendliness and good manners. Tiberius has passed Canine Good Citizenship and Therapy Dog tests. He loves to play, go for long walks and travel. He has been to Indiana and D.C. He loves hotels that are pet friendly!! Tiberius loves his family, which includes our cat “Princess Embers”. Tiberius formerly known as “Buster” was the only boy in a litter of 5. His Mom, Tuesday, was a rescue by K9 New Life. He and all of his sisters were happily adopted into Forever Homes pretty quick on account of being so cute! You can see Peaches success story too!

BUMBLE BEE

I adopted Tuesday Thanksgiving 2011 to be a friend to my other dog Roscoe who also was once a K9NL dog. Tuesday reminded me of my much beloved Pittie Camille. Tuesday was re-named to Bumble Bee. She was very skittish when she first joined the family; sleeping on the sofa seemed to be her “security blanket”. It took her until May of 2012 to feel at home. She is very patient with my 2-year old son Christopher; however, she draws the line when he wants to ride her like a pony. She made friends with Roscoe and adopted herself a Miniature Pinsher named Sebastian. I could not ask for a better and more loving dog.

CHUCKIE

Picture
Rest In Peace, Chuckie

My name is Britt Harmon. I adopted a dog named Chuckie from K9 New Life when I was the Manager of Strawbridge Animal Hospital in 1998-1999.
Chuckie was an American Staffordshire Terrier that had been rescued from a fight house in Norfolk, Virginia. He had been used as a "Dummy Dog". Your facility brought Chuckie to my practice for treatment and shots. He had been transferred to you from Dog and Cat Hospital in Norfolk after being treated successfully from the worst case of Demodex Mange many had ever seen. I adopted Chuckie and brought him to my small farm in Pungo. He had been at K9 New Life for a number of months by that time, and no one would adopt him as he was a Pit Bull. Didn't matter that he was "turned out" with his pack without incident. Must have been his ability to puncture a soccer ball in one bite that made people wary.
Anyway, I brought Chuckie home to my farm in Pungo, thinking it would either work or it wouldn't. It worked. That dear dog traveled with this family to Italy on military orders and was a true ambassador to his breed and a testimate that dogs can recover from the worst if they are given a chance and placed in the right circumstance. He was a friend to humans, dogs, cats, and horses, never aggressive to anything or anyone.
We had to say good-bye to Chuckie today. We approximated his age between 17-18 years old. He was a devoted companion, friend, and ambassador until the end. His poor old body simply gave out; he was dignified and loyal to the bitter end.
Our hearts are broken at the loss of our family member, but thanks are in order. We would have never had the honor of having this dear dog in our lives if it wasn't for K9 New Life Center all those years ago taking a chance on "Chuckie". This family's life was transformed because of that dear dog.

Bless You All,
Britt Harmon and Family

Lucie & Allie (Alexsis)

This is Lucie, who we adopted from K-9 NewLife three summers ago, as a skinny, fluffy little frightened pup who had been thrown away, then saved from euthanization. Over the past three years, she has put on about 40 pounds, grown considerably, and become a wonderful, loving, and affectionate girl who loveslovesloves to swim in our pool! She and our Katrina rescue, Skye, are like mother/daughter, with Skye, the little one, the Boss.

This Spring, we adopted Allie (Alexsis) – she and Lucie have bonded very closely, and Lucie finally has the outdoor playmate she has always wanted! There are so many squirrels to chase, balls to toss, and birds to bark at! Allie has discovered that the pool Lucie so loves is fabulous, and keeping her out is too hard, so we don’t even try anymore. She has gained a few more pounds, and is slowly becoming more affectionate and less skittish. She has also learned how to sleep in her own bed, how much fun Kongs and Wubbas are, and that the hole in the fence to Obie’s yard (next door Chessie) is full of wonder and awe.

Allie and Lucie love to take walks on their leashes, and we are planning on taking them hiking and swimming off 64th Street soon! Thank you so much for allowing us to have these wonderful girls – they enrich our lives considerably, and we cannot imagine our lives without them.

Denise, Harry, and Ian Williams

Foxy Cleopatra

Well, it has been 2 weeks and Misha, now Foxy Cleopatra, is so much a part of our lives none of us can believe it. She goes to work with us and loves all animals and people. She is a good citizen on the beach and the boardwalk and everyone who sees her comments on her smiling face. She rides in my mustang like she owns it. She loves to eat ice cubes and play fetch with her squirrel. She learns so quickly, who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks? Thank you so much!

Layne

Vinnie

I adopted Samson, now "Vinnie" in June from K-9 New Life. I wanted to let everyone know how he is doing! This summer we have hiked, gone on boat rides, swam and taken long runs. Everyone loves that he has no teeth, I call him my true little Mainer. Vinnie is living the high life!! Take care,

Katie

Bo

Picture
Hi everybody. My name is Bo. I am a very lucky dog in that I was rescued by K9 New Life when I was a young boy. I have lived with some really great families over the last few years while I waited for a forever home. These people taught me to be a happy and well mannered boy and I learned some really neat tricks too.

I went to live with Burton and Julia a few months ago and as luck would have it, a guy named Buddy walked by one day and saw me in the yard. He wanted to adopt me and give me a forever home. I like it there because I get to play all over the house and there's lots of comfy places to sleep. There's a nice yard to play in and I get to go on lots of walks on a leash.

Thanks K9 New Life for all you've done for me and for sticking with me for so long. And thanks to all the foster families who have cared for me over the years. That's all for now - time to go for a walk. See you out on the sidewalk.

Thanks everybody, Bo

Sasha

Sasha is doing great! She has adjusted really well and is living the good life! She is such a sweetheart! She is very vocal with the 'woo-woo's' and she howls at fire engines. She is just too funny for words! Her favorite thing is for everyone to go to bed. Then, when she wants us up, she throws her body against the bed! Our dog Buford has taught her a lot of bad habits, like barking! She runs around the yard and helps Buford chase whatever (imaginary things, we think). The two of them really love each other as long as it doesn't come to bone sharing! She has discovered that marrow bones are the best! She enjoys our yard and has been trying in vain to make friends with Hank, the cat. Sasha is great company for Buford and a great companion to us. Thanks for taking such good care of her until we found her!

Bentley, Zeke, & Martha

Hi, We thought it was time for us to get our pictures up on the success page as we are getting up in age and are still looking good :) Bentley was adopted in 2001, Zeke in 2006, and Martha in 2003. We are a very happy family; we love to go to the Dog Park and lay around and be spoiled. At one time we were all considered unwanted until K9 New Life gave us a second chance. Our Mom says that she can't imagine life without us and that makes us very happy!!!

Love, Bentley, Zeke, and Martha

Pete

Picture
It was love at first sight when my husband met Pete at a Petsmart adoption show. Despite the fact that we already owned three cats and two dogs and were fostering another dog, he convinced me that our home would simply not be complete without Pete. It didn't take much convincing... who wouldn't fall in love with this face?!

Most days Pete moves around our home like a tornado, but he's a very gentle and well-behaved little man. We've had Pete for almost 5 years now. We attempted to change his name numerous times, but nothing else stuck.

I cannot imagine a dog like Pete being put down; he has so much personality! Our family is extremely grateful to K-9 New Life for rescuing him from a shelter before his time ran out.

Shadow

Dear Friends at K-9 New Life:

This is Shadow (aka Frieda). I have been with my new family for 19 months and enjoying every minute of it. Mom & Dad didn't feel Frieda fit me so after one day I became Shadow. I love to follow Mom around. I have become best friends with Aunt Cindy's dog, Tiger. I go to work with Mom everyday. Last April, I went on my first road trip to Luray. The mountains were great (I even got my own bed in the hotel)! Unfortunately, I have allergies but it hasn't slowed me down. I have developed a love for camping. Aunt Cindy & Uncle Steve have their camper at Cherrystone on the Eastern Shore. We go up about once a month. I have attached some pictures. The 1st is bedtime for me and Tiger. The 2nd is me after a long walk and the 3rd is of Mom, Dad & me on the beach/bay at Cherrystone. Hardly ever am I left alone or put in a kennel. I stay with Aunt Cindy if Mom & Dad have to go out of town. When Aunt Cindy is gone, Tiger has sleepovers with me. Through rain, snow, or sunshine, Mom & Dad walk me once a day and twice on weekends. I know I haven't been by to visit "the gang" at Petsmart on Sundays. Mom says she will try to bring me by sometime soon.

Love, Shadow (aka Frieda)

sophie

In Memoriam: Sophie Sellers

Today, Sophie took her rightful place among the hallowed pack of Sellers pups before her at the close of a long life well-loved. Thank you especially to K-9 New Life, whose dedication to canine rescue made her story possible. Roughly a decade ago, a black and white hound named “Sophie” became a Sellers. That night she curled right up as she did every night by my side. We crossed the country together with my sidekick doing her part for the cause: snoring in the back seat and chasing bunnies in her sleep. Sophie never did anything by halves. Her naps made you want to sleep that well. No scent escaped her nose. Even as arthritis threatened to slow her down, Sophie summoned the will to sprint after rabbit or squirrel that dared enter her yard. Every minute of Sophie’s time with us revealed a heart both gentle and boundless. All she wanted to do was please. She was a family dog in every possible sense and the gentlest soul that I have ever known.

Words could never adequately describe the love woven through the simple things that Sophie did everyday in her decade. Small insignificant things loom large like finding “Dad’s” side of the bed in the night or the nuzzling nose that sought out any unoccupied hand. Her shifty-eyed glances were as beloved as her knack for literal obedience. “Out of the kitchen?” Technically the edge of the living room is “out of the kitchen.” She’d never go any further.

As our family has grown, Soph has always been my constant.  She kept Bianca young while B taught her the ropes. Then it was Sophie who became our elder statesdog and model companion. Kim became Sophie’s mom and my wife. Our phones filled with pictures of Sophie’s daily antics. No dog could have been a better first dog for our daughter
Imogen than Sophie. One of the great joys of the past year among all its challenges has been watching their bond. Under Sophie’s watch, Imogen went from a crawl to a wild sprint. She learned to be “gentle” with all things Sophie except her name. Before Imogen could even say “dog,” she knew her dog’s name and set about the task of creating her own names for her dog (“Soap-a;” “Shoe-f-da;” “Sofa;” etc). To our daughter’s mind, there are dogs, but Sophie will always precede them. Last night Imogen gave her pup a big hug before bed but turned around to give her one more and say “nite-nite Sofa.”

Perhaps the greatest gift that Sophie could have given us were her senior years. Soph slowed down and experienced the frustrations that come with infirmity and age, but she did so with dignity and grace. Stoic in the face of anything that her body tried to throw in her path, Sophie soldiered on every day. For Kim and me, this past year has been a long goodbye. Call it Sophie’s “thank you” tour. Grateful Determination.

Over the years many have commented that in Sophie we found and raised an ideal dog. However, I am a firm believer that any dog can be as amazing as you let them be. What Sophie needed was what so many rescue dogs just like her need every day: just a chance to experience love in a home with kind people. If you got to know Soph or have read
her story please remember Soph and that a canine rescue granted her a chance when no one else would. Because of groups like K-9 New Life, people get rescued every day by the love of dogs like our girl. As we say in our family, “all dogs go to heaven.” Pups like Sophie stay with you always.
Rest in peace, sweet girl.

TANNER

Hello Friends at K-9 New Life :D

We just want to THANK YOU sosososososososososo much for our precious Tanner! As you can see, he is LIVING LARGE!! in a huge house, with a huge yard to play in, and with people who absolutely love and ADORE him to bits!! Napping all day when he wants to, laying on the couch watching tv with Mama, and sleeping on a Tempurpedic king size bed... he is HAPPY!! hahaha :D

After losing our beloved Chance three weeks ago, I couldn't function; my world crumbled beneath me. It took me a couple weeks to get back to ME again. When I saw Tanner online, I just KNEW he was meant for our family...I just FELT IT!!! The joy he has brought back into this house is priceless!! It is beyond us WHY ANYONE would return him or wouldn't have taken him home a long time ago.

We like to think it was because he was waiting for US!! Though he is not what most would consider perfect and has a few issues, he is perfect for us!!! THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts for this AMAZING blessing and for allowing US
to be his FOREVER & EVER & EVER family!!  We are so in love with him!!!

Much Love,
The Yau Family <3 <3  :)

Picture
In May 2005 I was 4 months post liver transplant surgery and was newly allowed to drive, so I began my search for a companion. I ended up at a Petsmart K9 New Life showing and found 3 or 4 dogs that I liked and scheduled a home visit. That same weekend, VB Animal Fair at Redwing, K9NL received Rachel after being asked for help by Animal Control workers to save her. She was on the list for that night. As it turns out she had been on the list twice before but the workers talked them out of it. Anyway time was up so K9NL stepped in. Unfortunately where she was placed was not good. The Foster had 2 dogs of her own and her female did not like having Rachel in her house. Tuesday was my home visit and before long I was convinced to foster Rachel so off my son and I went to get her. By the next day it was all over; she had a permanent home. She was my soul mate, my shadow, my girl. Unfortunately she developed liver disease, stopped eating, and I was left with no other choices. So on Aug 4th I put her to sleep. That ended almost 9.5 years of friendship and love. May she rest in peace.

Things have finally settled a little here in Northern Michigan, so I thought I would send a Tilly update. Tilly is a creature of habit (maybe her breed, maybe her background, probably both, who knows) and she doesn't handle change very well. It took a couple months of being here to finally settle into a routine. I still wouldn't consider her truly house-trained, but more trained of habit. I have to be watchful of her actions to catch her before she goes in the house. She doesn't communicate verbally that she wants to go outside, unfortunately. We manage the routine well, so it works.
We had to do some proper placement of her cage in the house to stop her going on the living room carpet. In case your interested, I moved her cage from the back of the house to the living room, which is the farthest room from the back door where she goes out. I read online that Walker Hounds relieve themselves farthest away from their "home" as possible. By placing her cage in the living room (the only room in the house with carpet), she would travel farther to the back of the house to "go". At least if she went in the house, it was on tile and can be cleaned up easily.
Another problem we had was the fact that we didn't have a fence any longer. We live on 4 acres and having a fence just isn't possible. Our neighbors have nearly 100 acres on each side of us and behind us. This area is abundant with deer. She had a blast chasing them and disappearing for hours, but all of the roads here are 55 mph, so I really worried about her safety. The previous owners had a nice long dog zip line here. She HATED it in the beginning and would just freeze when you put her on it. After some time, she's finally comfortable with it and will go outside and relieve herself while on it. She is a big drama queen when it comes to trying anything new. Even this morning when we were leaving for her morning walk, I tried to take her out a different door than usual and she pee'd all over the floor. She just gets so nervous over anything "new". She absolutely loves her morning walks. After the kids get on the school bus, she's back in the house shaking her booty ready for me to take her.
All that being said, she is doing wonderful. She is a smart cookie, that's for sure. She's also a big love bug. She listens very well and just wants to please us. Just before we moved, we randomly visited Chesapeake Animal Services (new place over on Military Hwy, we were avoiding packing, truth be told) and adopted a little Corgi/Chihuahua (guessing?) mix named Patsy. Her and Tilly get along well. Luckily Patsy doesn't have the typical Chihuahua traits of attaching to one person. Patsy would probably be considered the "alpha" of the two, but when Tilly really wants something, her size will overrule Patsy immediately. It's funny. They are a good pair. Thanks again for Sweet Tilly!
-Sarah

Dolly

Picture
Dolly is progressing albeit slowly. She’s still very skittish but is slowly coming out of her shell. She enjoys romping in the backyard with her other pack members and it’s great to see her zoom across the yard with tail held high. She will, on occasion, bark at the neighbor’s two Pitt Bulls and then something will spook her and she’s off hiding in the bushes!

She’s also discovered the toy box and has a grand time pulling out “favorites”. She's much loved and has adapted nicely!

CODY

Picture
Dear K9 New Life:

Just an update on our dog Cody. Way back in 2000, we adopted Cody from K9 New Life. He was two years old at the time. I remember seeing his picture on your website and thinking he was just the cutest thing ever. We put in an application to adopt him, and I remember when the person from K9 came to do our home check mentioning there were 5 other families who also wanted Cody. We were lucky enough to adopt him, and we brought him home to join our two other dogs, Dallas and Champ. Since that time both Dallas and Champ have crossed over to wait for me at the Rainbow Bridge. Cody, however will be celebrating his 14th birthday in a few weeks. He still plays like a puppy and has always been the alpha dog in our house. We have since adopted Cinco (shelter dog from Currituck) and Meadow (Richmond SPCA) and also have Bowzer (a stray). Cody, even at his age, keeps everyone in line. I recently came across the original paperwork from K9 New Life, and thought I should send you all an update. Still the cutest thing ever, and still so very loved. Thank you for allowing us to bring Cody into our lives.

Beebe & Layla

Picture
I've fostered over thirty dogs since K-9 New Life left their facility in Virginia Beach. Until this past month, all but two found forever homes. However, I've had my last two fosters, Layla and Beebe, for over four years. That is a long time to have a foster, and too long to easily give them up to another family. Therefore, it's time to admit they aren't going anywhere. So last month we went ahead and officially became their forever home.

As the picture shows, they had already found their home and were wondering when we were going to catch on.

J.D., Joey, & Trey

Eleven years ago I was watching Channel 13 news before I headed to work. A puppy was shown and I fell in love. Joey, the only female of the litter belonging to Roxie, came into our home at 6 weeks old. She celebrated her 11th birthday in Orlando, FL on the 21st of November. Lucky us! We promised Joey a sister when we moved to Orlando in 2003. January 2004, in a new home, was time to deliver on our promise. We contacted K9NL for a pitiful looking hound. Although they were incredulous that we wanted a dog from VA Beach when we now lived in Florida, proved providential. The details would take too long... but J.D. (formerly "Maisy") was delivered to us in January of 2004. We were told that foster homes wouldn't keep her longer than two weeks… her sister "Daisy" used her as a chew toy and punching bag. J.D. (Joey's Dog) has been with us for almost 8 WONDERFUL years... she is the favorite of the workers at Dog Day Afternoon, her doggie daycare facility, and is the "personality hound".  Both Joey and J.D. have been graced with a third sister, Trey, who joined our family last February... a hunter wanted her put to sleep due to a CURABLE infection and the cost incurred. Thank you for loving dogs the way they SHOULD be loved... and thanks for Joey and J.D. -- the best things that have ever come from "Surprising Suffolk!"

Gail Agor, mom to Joey, J.D. and Trey… hounds extraordinaire!

Millie

I just wanted to let you all know how Millie is doing. I adopted her from K9 New Life in November 2008. She was a rescue from Tappahannock that I think you all started calling Tiny Bones because she was extremely thin when you got her. As you can see from the photo, she is my baby girl and extremely spoiled! I adopted another dog from a rescue group outside of Richmond in August 2009 and they are inseparable. Everyone who loves dogs should look to rescue groups to find the love of their life before paying outrageous amounts to breeders… rescue pets have so very much love to give and they don’t ask for much in return. If I could have 20 dogs, I would! Thank you for bringing my Millie to me!!

Frankie

Lucy

Hi! My name is Lucy and boy did I luck out! They say I am one of those BBD's (big black dogs) and can be hard to adopt out... all my Mom and Dad did was get me a reflective collar so I can be seen in the house at night. K9 New Life found my forever home with Buford, my companion senior dog, and Hank, a cat who likes me to chase him. My Mom and Dad spoil me so much even after I ate my Mom's slippers (only because I love her so much). I have a beautiful yard full of squirrels and leaves-yep-leaves move! Being only 3 years old I'm pretty active, but I'm very good when Mom and Dad are gone at work! I go for long walks and I can always take a nap on the couch! I love everybody and I am ever so gentle a girl. Thank you K9 New Life for my forever home...
I feel like I've been here forever.

Annie

We adopted Annie 2 months ago. She is quite a playful character and keeps up well with her big sister Ocie (2.5 year old Pittbull/Terrier). She has some hurdles to overcome with potty training and boundries, but we love her just the same!! She is very smart, loves her treats, and takes long walks with Daddy and Ocie. Thank you K-9 New Life for giving us the opportunity to give Annie her forever home!!

Jake

Dear K-9 New Life,

My boyfriend and I saw Jake as the 'Featured K-9' and immediately fell in love with him. About a week later, he officially became ours. It's now been a couple of months and Jake is doing great and is living the life! It's a tough life... going to the beach, and going on walks and playing fetch every day. He also loves to chase the cat around the house... I'm pretty sure the cat doesn't love it as much but it's pretty funny to watch.
Jake is a terrific and super smart dog and he will be starting obedience classes in a couple of weeks and we are so excited and confident that he will do great and make lots of friends. We feel extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to bring Jake into our home and I'm sure he feels the same way.

Thank you, K-9 New Life!

Kayla

Picture
We met Kayla (formerly Ahava) in 2002 or 2003 through your organization and took her home that very day. She is a lab mix, possibly lab and golden retriever but we are not certain. At the time, she was grossly underweight, but still beautiful. We could tell she had puppies recently, and we think one may have been a black lab named Nick. At first she was nervous around kids and new people, but the more we exposed her to social situations, the more she enjoyed it. She has a little buddy next door -- a small dog named Scoodles who likes to steal her toys, but she thinks this is ok, because she has so many.

Kayla has been such a joy in our lives since day one and we cannot imagine life without her! She is such a sweetheart and very smart. Loves to chase squirrels, go for walks and fetch the newspaper and mail. She chases reflections like a cat and loves to snuggle with us in the winter when it's cold. She also plays Hide and Seek with her toys. She will wait at the top of the stairs, out of sight, while we hide her toy. Once she gets the ok signal, she'll search everywhere until she finds that one toy, ignoring all the others.

Thank you to K9 New Life for the wonderful work that you do; fostering dogs until their new owners find them. Kayla is such a wonderful addition to our family!

Max

Check out this wonderful update!
"7/12/15: Today we celebrate 9 *amazing* years with our Max (formerly known as Caramel Latte/Tigger). Many years ago, your organization saved Max from death row out in Westmoreland county and fostered him until he arrived in our lives. Honestly, it's hard for us to even imagine Max having a life before us because it just feels as if he has always been here. We love that you still have his photo with our girls back in 2008 up on your website and thought it'd be fun to recreate it all these years later. Thank you so much for saving this incredible dog and allowing him to become a part of our family"

Max (formerly Caramel Latte/Tigger) is doing very well -- we just celebrated 3 years with him this past July and he is an absolute light in our lives. He still rings his bell to go outside and is constantly receiving compliments on his unique beauty and coloring -- he is a favorite at the vet's office. A gentle giant and still puppy-like, he is just such a beloved member of our family. I am not sure I have written since we moved, but we are now located in the Hickory section of Chesapeake so Max has a full 1/2 acre to run free and play. We still enjoy walking him and he likes to get out to see the neighborhood, but we have much better games of fetch now :) Max also has found a new buddy in our newly adopted cat, Mr. Bogs. Mr. Bogs is a tuxedo kitten who was being fostered at the Web of Life rescue. Max was the first dog Mr. Bogs had ever encountered, but he won him over quickly and they became fast friends. Max is still thriving and doing wonderfully.

Sincerely,
Stacey, Matt, Jules, Alyssa, Madilyn, Max, Miss Kitty and Bogs
